Commitment, Service and Advocacy for Travellers

On Tuesday, May 17, 2005, the citizens of British Columbia will choose their next provincial government. As a member of the Canadian Snowbird Association (CSA), now is the time to make sure your voice is heard. Take these three questions to your local candidates. Ask if they support your right to travel. Ask what they will do on your behalf.

Portability

The Canada Health Act says Canadians who are temporarily absent from Canada must continue to be covered for insured health services during their absence, and insured services are to be paid at the home province's rate.

B.C. is breaking the Canada Health Act!

That's not fair!

Question
Do you support the portability
principle of the Canada Health Act?

Out-of-Country
Emergency Health
Services
Did you know that B.C. has the lowest reimbursement rate in all of Canada? It's just $75! It's true!

The national average reimbursement rate is $400. B.C.'s rate was established over 30 years ago, and has not changed since 1974! That means if you take sick outside Canada, the Government of British Columbia will reimburse just $75 per day toward your emergency expenses!

$75? That's not fair!

Question
Will you support an increase to the out-of-country emergency health services reimbursement rate?

Prescription Medication

Did you know that B.C. allows its residents only a 30-day supply of prescription medication and a 100-day supply of maintenance medication? Other provinces allow supplies up to six months!

Don't make us prisoners in our own province!

That's not fair!

Question
Will you support increasing the supply of prescription medication during periods of travel?

We don't want
election promises!

On May 31, 2001, while Leader of the Official Opposition, Gordon Campbell wrote to the CSA, starting: "A BC Liberal Government will ensure that BC health care is universal, accessible, portable, comprehensive and publicly administered, consistent with the five principles of the Canada Health Act."

Tow years later, Premier Gordon Campbell wrote: "While I appreciate this amount [$75] is lower than amounts charged by hospitals in the United States, it would be irresponsible of MSP to approve an increase in expenditure of Canadian healthcare dollars in other countries where the health care system function [sic] largely on a for-profit basis."

That's not fair!

Stop punishing travellers who takes sick on vacations!

The Canada Health Act calls for insured services to be paid at the home province's rate! $75 a day does not come close to the cost of emergency services - in B.C. or anywhere else in the world!

We want fair treatment!
