Renew your license!

Dear Bird Talk,
Imagine our surprise when my wife was stopped and ticketed for driving without a licence – $400 plus.
We had somehow forgotten to submit an eye exam and in our absence, the second request – warning that if we don’t submit same, the licence will be revoked and the actual revocation sent by registered mail – was returned to sender.
When we explained those events to the judge, we were told that in the province of Québec, per law, if absent for more than 30 days, you have to give the licence bureau an address so that they can reach you.
Ignorance of the law did not help us; we had to pay the ticket, plus court costs and interest. hoping that our misadventure might save someone from a similar costly event.
Yours truly,

Ed: This must have been very frustrating, not to mention the waste of your valuable time. This type of situation can arise in many areas and that is why we recommend that a reliable and timely mail forwarding system be used, even if you are RV’ing around the world. Anything that renews can be a potential disaster in the making. How about your home insurance NOT renewing while you are away and a subsequent fire? Life and disability insurance could be totally lost if not renewed on time. Passports, health cards, auto clubs, memberships and lots of other things require your attention BEFORE travelling; and mail forwarding, in our opinion, is absolutely necessary if travelling for more than 30 days. That way, you will not have to notify anyone, either.
