Overstaying 182 days in the U.S.

Posted date : Nov 6, 2017.

Can anyone comment on what happens if you overstay your 182 days in the U.S.? I understand that the IRS can consider you taxable on worldwide income, but do they contact you? Has anyone had this happen to them? If it’s over by a few days, are they still going to make an effort to […]

Filling out Form 8840

Posted date : Nov 6, 2017.

We are snowbirds who have been filling out the Form 8840 yearly. We understand that the B2 visa allows us ? as visitors ? to stay in the U.S. for up to six months in a 12-month period. What confuses me and others, I would think, is how to enter the number of days you […]

Wonder…

Posted date : Nov 6, 2017.

Contrary to Ross Quigley’s experience (Editor’s Message), I got rid of the kid in me decades ago; he was always getting me into trouble. I tend to avoid adults who attend movies based on comic books and I’ve already seen enough fireworks. But I do have a healthy sense of wonder. The first time I […]

Our Roadtrek 2008 is owned equally by an American citizen and a Canadian citizen. It’s licensed in Arizona and fully insured for both of us and for both countries. My question: do I have to import it into Canada when it spends about six months in each country (as do I). The approx. time intervals […]

American waiver needed to enter U.S.?

Posted date : Nov 6, 2017.

Dear Bird Talk, I read your article about the gentleman who was stopped at Newark because of an old DUI for which he had a Canadian pardon. The offence was from 32 years earlier, but he would require an American waiver. I was alarmed, as we travel to the states frequently and my husband had […]

Filing 8840 for first time; can’t remember dates

Posted date : Nov 6, 2017.

Dear Bird Talk, We are filling out the form 8840 for the first time and do not remember the exact dates for the last three years. How accurate do we have to be? Would it be a problem if the dates were a few days off? Kathy Aubrey Cobourg, ON Response: Ed.: As a first-timer, […]

For potential eight-month stay in U.S., will IRS still restrict to 183 days?

Posted date : Nov 6, 2017.

Dear Bird Talk, I understand that the eight-month option is before congress again, but I was told by someone that it will only apply to immigration and not to IRS. IRS will still restrict us to 183 days. Does not seem to make sense. Do you have any comment on that? Joseph Hanzelka Oshawa, ON […]
