Car Insurance in the U.S.

Dear Bird Talk,
I thought this info might be of some interest to other snowbirds who might be contemplating purchasing a car in the U.S. My wife and I bought a car in Florida last year so that we would have a second car for our (meaning my wife’s) convenience. When I went to get insurance, I contacted Geico as they tend to do a lot of advertising and I also invest in their parent company. I was told, by them, as well as by many other large insurance companies, that they don’t recognize our Canadian driving history. What this means is that we would be paying insurance premiums as if we had never driven before. I have been licensed in Canada for more than 40 years and have never had an accident. Their rates were ridiculously high!! I was fortunate enough to happen onto Allstate Assurance Company and they seemed to be the only company that did recognize our previous experience. They did require that we provide them with an abstract of our Ontario driving record, but that was easily accessible. We have been with them for a year-and-a-half now and find them very professional in their dealings with us.
