Percutaneous Vertebroplasty

Dear Sir,
In the winter 2000 issue you had an article under Health & Wellness pertaining to the procedure “percutaneous vertebroplasty” which was administered to your mother for an osteoporosis condition.
I would be interested in knowing what the lasting results of this treatment were.

This is the toughest question to answer that we have received in a long time. My mother never complains about anything so I can only give you my observations.
(a) Following the procedure there was a dramatic improvement
(b) No apparent side effects of any kind
(c) Prednisone, the cause of much of the osteoporosis problem, is no longer needed after many years of treatment
(d) She now takes Fosomay and her bone density has increased slightly over last year
All this, for a person in their mid-eighties, is quite remarkable to me. Just the ability to give up Prednisone makes the procedure of great value and her back also has the extra support of the cemented vertebrae. Would we do it again? Absolutely!
