While U.S. citizens and lawful permanent residents (green card holders) are required to provide
their U.S. Social Security Number (SSN) in order to obtain a Florida driver’s licence, Canadian citizens
using their Canadian passports are exempt from this requirement. Do not give your Canadian Social
Insurance Number (SIN) as a substitute.
Texas Driver’s Licence
Texas currently operates a single “full” driver’s licence system.
You do not require a Texas driver’s licence number in order to register a vehicle.
If you apply for a Texas driver’s licence, the state department of Motor Vehicles will void your
Canadian licence.
Texas Identification Card
The state of Texas does not permit individuals who are not U.S. citizens, not U.S. lawful permanent
residents (i.e. green card holders) or foreigners who have been admitted to the United States for six
months or less to obtain a state ID card.
Can I Extend My Stay in the United States?
Canadian citizens are admitted to the United States as temporary visitors for a maximum period of
“six months less a day” or 182 days in a twelve month period. While in the U.S., Canadian citizens are
allowed to apply for an extension of their initial 182-day limit. Canadian permanent residents (not
citizens) are admitted to the U.S. for a maximum stay of 90 days, but cannot extend their stay from
within the United States.
If you are a Canadian citizen and wish to extend your stay in the United States, you must request
permission from the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) before your initial authorized
stay expires. The USCIS recommends that you file your application at least 45 days before your stay
expires, or as soon as you know that you will require an extension of stay.
You may apply to USCIS to extend your stay if you were lawfully admitted into the U.S. with a
non-immigrant visa, your non-immigrant visa status remains valid, and you have not committed any
crimes that would make you ineligible.
When filing your application under the B-2 visa category (Visitor for Pleasure), you must include
the original I-94 (Non-immigrant Arrival/Departure Record) for each person being included in the
application. A spouse may be listed as a co-applicant on the application. In addition to the applica-
tion form, you must also include:
