Canada – Daily questions before you

Automobile Insurance Liability Limits
What is the liability limit on your current auto insurance policy? Is it less than $2 million?
If you drive your Canadian-registered vehicle in the United States, you should speak with your auto
insurance broker about having the limit increased to a minimum of $2 million of coverage. It may be
cheaper than you think.
In the event of an accident in the United States, it is important to remember that your insurance
policy will pay-out in Canadian dollars (up to your limit) while any claim for damages from the
United States will be made against you in U.S. dollars.
While reviewing your policy limits, don’t forget to also speak with your auto insurance broker to
see if you must formally notify them of your departure date (and arrival date) back in Canada with
your vehicle. Some companies may require formal notification and/or payment of a supplementary
premium for the added risk of operating your vehicle in a foreign country, especially if you are going
to be away for more than 30 days. The association recommends that you speak to your insurance
broker and have them make a note on your file that you normally travel to the United States.
Duty-Free & Carry-On Items in the European Union
If you are travelling to (or taking a connecting flight through) a country that is part of the European
Union (EU), you need to be aware that the EU hand baggage rules, in terms of carrying liquids, gels
and duty-free liquid purchases through a security checkpoint, are different to airport rules in North
America.
When passing through an airport security checkpoint you will have to place all of your liquids and
gels in one (1) clear, closed, resealable zip-top plastic bag that is not larger than 18-20 cm x 20-22
cm (6” x 9” or 8”x7”) in size. The total capacity of the plastic bag cannot be greater than one (1) litre
in volume and no individual liquid, gel, paste, lotion or aerosol container can be larger than 100 ml
(3.4 oz).
Within the European Union, liquids and gels that you purchase after passing through passport
control, or on-board the aircraft will be packaged and sealed for you with the receipt. The unbroken
seal is valid for 24 hours.
If you buy liquids or gels at a non-EU airport (including duty-free purchases at your departing airport
in North America) your purchases will be confiscated at the EU airport security checkpoint when you
are boarding your connecting flight. This will also happen if you make a purchase on-board an aircraft
that is operated by an airline from a non-EU country.
If you were thinking of making a duty-free purchase (such as cologne, perfume or other liquid or
gel) from your original departing airport outside the EU (such as Canada or the United States) please
ensure that the size is not larger than 100 ml in volume so you can transfer it to your carry-on reseal-
able plastic bag once you arrive at the first airport and before boarding your connecting flight.
