Dear Snowbirds,
In our Member Advisory issued on March 28, 2014, we discussed the joint Canada/U.S. declaration titled Beyond the Border: A Shared Vision for Perimeter Security and Economic Competitiveness. The purpose of the program is to “to enhance our security and accelerate the legitimate flow of people, goods and services.”
Part of the declaration includes a bi-national border initiative in which entry and exit data will be shared on individuals travelling between Canada and the United States.
While the initial stages of this border initiative have already been implemented, the information shared has been limited to permanent residents and third-country nationals. On June 30, 2014, the border program was scheduled to be expanded to include both Canadian and American citizens.
The Canadian Snowbird Association (CSA) has recently learned that the full exchange of data on Canadian and American travellers has been delayed. According to Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA), the required legislative and regulatory changes have still not been made. At this time, a new effective date has not yet been established.
We will provide you with more information as soon as it becomes available.
